The Every

I came across this book from stumbling through YouTube algorithms. The catchy title of the video is “The Book That Made Me Quit My Smartphone” which grabbed my interest. The review is great and I’d suggest watching it if you are at all interested in this book.

This is the second book, but you do not need any familiarity with the prior book. The Every is a conglomeration of many tech companies (Amazon, Google, facebook, Apple) in the not too distant future. A future where monopoly has become acceptable and the great lie of tech saving us from all of our problems rains supreme.

The story centers around Delaney, who plans to take down the large company. She does this by getting a job there and subsequently introduces one bad idea after another in hopes that this will finally be the thing to cause huge outrage and backlash towards the Every. The issue is that it does not and this becomes a large theme of the book, what do humans want and why do they want what is not good for them.
