Though we use a composting service for our kitchen waste, there were many missed opportunities for yard waste. I had found a few designs online which all effectively contain a pile made on the soil. The goal is to provide adequate airflow as you layer greens and browns. The front has slats so that as the pile grows, you can add slats to contain it, but also remove them to allow for mixing of your compost.
This was completed with very inexpensive pine wood. Pine is much cheaper than cedar and should any of the boards eventually rot, they will be less than one dollar to replace. I expect it will last for many years though.
